Bad Generals ‘Krautrock TV’

I am delighted to have released the first solo single from Neil Haydock, formerly of 90’s Ultimate Records band, Submarine.

I was press officer and radio plugger for Submarine. We signed them to Ultimate having seen an awesome show at the iconic Falcon in Camden in May 1992.

We put them in the studio (Bark in Walthamstow) to record their songs so we could work out a release plan.

‘We bashed down everything we had’ according to  Neil, ‘we took the piss and recorded things like ‘John Cougar Mellonhead’ and ‘Psychedelia Coming Down (On A Cornflake)’ that had really obvious rock changes and completely ridiculous words. Ha ha. Andy loved ‘Psychedelia..’ and said it should be a single , we had to tell him it was a piss take Haha!’

There were still enough fantastic tracks that weren’t taking the micky for Ultimate to organise Submarine to go to  Elephant Studio with American producer, Keith Cleversley.

Submarine

Keith had already been working with Mercury Rev and Spiritualized (who he had just finished recording ‘Medication’ with at Bath Moles) and was Submarine‘s first choice producer. After the recordings were completed, Keith went to Oklahoma to start ‘Transmissions From The Satellite Heart’ with The Flaming Lips, including the song ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’. He played Wayne Coyne the freshly recorded Submarine album

‘Submarine, a ray of light in an otherwise dark world’ Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips).

Neil and I got back in touch a few years ago when I was writing my blog about those wonderful Ultimate Records years, we jogged each other’s memories and Neil helped me knock those chapters into shape with quotes and laughs.

I started to send him very early versions of music I was working on (that would become my ‘Ghost Tapes 1 to 9’ album).

Then Neil started to send me his new recordings, his ‘Lo-fi Experimental Shed Pop’. I was blown away.

So here is the debut Bad Generals (AKA Neil Haydock) single, it’s an epic 8 minute groovy darn thing, ‘Krautrock TV‘.

Welcome back Neil!
